Starting a keto diet can bring exciting changes, especially as your body shifts from burning carbohydrates to burning fat for fuel. This transition often leads to rapid fat loss, which many people welcome. But along with fat loss, your body sheds water weight and essential electrolytes. Losing these minerals can cause dehydration, fatigue, and flu-like symptoms commonly known as the keto flu. Drinking water alone won’t fix this problem because your body needs electrolytes to function properly. While commercial electrolyte supplements exist, many contain sugar or artificial sweeteners that can interfere with ketosis or raise insulin levels. That’s why I developed a simple homemade electrolyte recipe that supports hydration and helps prevent keto flu symptoms.
Why Electrolytes Matter on Keto
When you reduce carbohydrate intake drastically, your insulin levels drop. This signals your kidneys to excrete excess sodium and water, which leads to a loss of electrolytes like sodium, potassium, magnesium, and iodine. These minerals are vital for:
Maintaining fluid balance
Supporting nerve and muscle function
Regulating blood pressure
Preventing cramps and fatigue
Without enough electrolytes, you may experience symptoms such as headaches, dizziness, muscle cramps, and extreme tiredness. This is the keto flu, and it can discourage many from continuing the diet.
Replacing electrolytes is essential to stay healthy and energized during ketosis. Salt, once unfairly demonized, is now recognized as a crucial nutrient, especially on low-carb diets. You can have as much salt as you want without worrying about it being harmful, salt to taste!
Problems with Store-Bought Electrolyte Supplements
Many electrolyte supplements on the market contain added sugars or artificial sweeteners. For someone on keto, sugar is off-limits because it spikes insulin and interrupts ketosis. Artificial sweeteners may seem like a good alternative but can have downsides:
Some are linked to health risks, including cancer in animal studies
They may trigger insulin responses in some people
They often taste nasty
Because of these concerns, I prefer a natural, homemade approach to electrolyte replenishment, and its cheaper too.
My Homemade Electrolyte Recipe
This recipe is easy to make, uses natural ingredients, and provides the key electrolytes your body needs during keto.
Ingredients for 1 Pint Glass
1 or 2 splashes of apple cider vinegar
1 or 2 pinches of Himalayan salt or any mineral-rich salt (avoid sea salt due to microplastics and lower mineral content)
1 or 2 drops of iodine tincture
Juice 1 one or 2 lime wedges
(optional half the glass of Triphala Decoction-)
The rest of the glass Soda Water
Why These Ingredients?
Apple cider vinegar adds potassium and acetic acid, which may help with digestion and blood sugar regulation.
Himalayan salt contains over 80 trace minerals, including sodium, potassium, calcium, and magnesium, which support hydration and muscle function.
Iodine is essential for thyroid health and metabolism. Table salt only contains enough iodine to prevent goiter but not enough for daily needs and you probably can't get it from food these days because the soil is so depleted.
Lime and Soda Water are more for flavor and palatability.
Triphala powder is a time tested Ayurvedic preparation that is known to deliver large amounts of vitamin C, protect the liver, and have anti-cancer properties. It is also a mild laxative depending on how you take it.
How to Prepare
Use a pint glass (about 16 ounces).
Add 1 or 2 splashes of apple cider vinegar.
Stir in 1 or 2 pinches of Himalayan salt.
Add 1 or 2 drops of iodine tincture.
Squeeze one or two lime or lemon wedges
Fill half the glass with Triphala Decoction or Water
Fill the rest with soda water
Mix well and drink as needed, adding the triphala Decoction- and more soda water as you go. I will sip on it for an hour or two.
Make the Triphala Decoction- add up to a teaspoon of Triphala powder to a pint of water and stir. Start with a quarter teaspoon and increase daily to give your gut time to adjust. Put half in the electrolyte drink, and fill it more as you drink it. Don't drink the slug in the bottom unless you are constapated. You can fill the glass with the triphala sludge with water and let it sit all day or overnight and use it again.
This simple drink helps replace lost electrolytes and supports your body’s transition into ketosis.

Signs You Need More Electrolytes
You might need to increase your electrolyte intake if you notice:
Intense thirst and frequent urination
Muscle cramps or spasms
Fatigue and weakness
Headaches or dizziness
Brain fog or difficulty concentrating
These symptoms often appear when slipping back into ketosis or during the first few days of starting keto but you don't need to be on a keto diet to benefit from an electrolyte drink.
Tips for Staying Hydrated and Balanced on Keto
Drink water regularly but pair it with electrolytes to avoid dilution of minerals.
Use mineral-rich salts instead of plain table salt.
Include foods high in potassium and magnesium, such as leafy greens, avocados, nuts, and seeds.
Avoid excessive caffeine and alcohol, which can dehydrate you.
Monitor your symptoms and adjust electrolyte intake accordingly.
Final Thoughts on Electrolytes and Keto
Electrolyte balance is a key factor in successfully maintaining a keto lifestyle. Losing electrolytes through water weight loss is natural but must be managed to avoid keto flu symptoms. My homemade electrolyte recipe offers a natural, simple, and effective way to replenish these vital minerals without added sugars or artificial ingredients.
Try this recipe when starting or maintaining your keto diet to stay hydrated, energized, and comfortable. Remember, your body needs more than just water to thrive during this metabolic shift, and in general.
