This book is a must for anyone interested in gut health and food sensitivities. Not only does Dr. Grundy address what foods harm your gut biome, he addresses what foods feed the healthy flora in your gut. In this book we read about the science behind leaky gut syndrome, previously thought to be an unproven myth by many practitioners in the medical field. We learn how many foods can trigger an immune response if they pass through the gut wall unprocessed by the microbes who break these foods down. Not only does Dr. Gundry poke holes in myths surrounding what makes the famed Mediterranean Diet so healthy, he also points out the poor science behind elevating this diet to the healthiest diet we can eat, and the fact that the so called "blue zones" where people live the longest were cherry picked by biased researchers.


In order to restore balance in the gut we need to stop eating things that harm our good gut bacteria. Processed sugar and grains are at the top of the list, but one of the least considered substances in the mix is naturally occurring plant proteins called lectins. These are anti-nutrients that plants produce to protect themselves from being eaten, and there are many seemingly healthy vegetables that health conscious people eat every day that contain high amounts of them in their leaves, skins, and seeds. We are given a breakdown of the worst offenders in this category, and suggestions about approaching an elimination diet in order to detect food sensitivities are covered in this book, and in greater detail in his book The Plant Paradox. For anyone interested in the fascinating new science behind gut health, this book is a must.
